The principal is the main figure who can set an example and good behavior for his subordinates, whether the things implemented by the principal are good or bad, that is what his subordinates set an example for. The quality of the school principal will be very closely related to various aspects of school life, one of which is important is the development of character education in schools. Character education is an effort to help the development of children's souls both physically and mentally, from their natural nature towards a humane and better civilization. This research aims to: Describe the efforts made by school principals in developing character education. The method used in this research is a qualitative method in the form of descriptive analysis, namely research that aims to describe a situation or characteristic as it exists and then analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques. The techniques used in this research are observation, interview and documentation techniques. Based on the research results, it shows that the leadership role of the principal in developing character education at SMAN 3 Bangko District can be seen from the planning, implementation and supervision of character education development activities. Planning can be seen from the school's vision, mission and goals which instill character values. In the implementation of character education activities, it can be seen from the strategies carried out in developing character education, namely through learning activities, developing school culture and learning activities and co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In implementing programs and activities, the school principal has implemented character values such as: self-confidence, rational, logical, critical, analytical and creative. The school principal controls/supervises the character education program through supervision, monitoring and evaluation of planning, implementation and results of fulfilling the implementation of character education. The implementation of character education involves all school stakeholders in the process. All teachers and employees feel involved starting from planning, implementing and evaluating school programs
